New Varieties Bring Judge to Tears Diane Lagerstedt
Yes, I admit it. I'm not ashamed to say that beautiful flowers have the capacity to make me cry. To me they are the floral equivalent of a Hallmark commercial with out the soundtrack; which makes them even more emotionally potent. So, how could someone so emotionally connected to flowers act as a judge at the Outstanding New Varieties Competition with out presenting a ribbon to each and every bloom?
I was honored to be asked to judge at this year's competition and SAF is ready for judges like me with a strict set of criteria with which to evaluate every entry. Each entry is judged independently and assessed on it's own merit rather than compared to other entries. There are five categories each worth between 1-10 points making a perfect specimen worth 50 points. Blue ribbons were awarded to those between 42 and 50 and red ribbons went to those earning between 39-41 points. The assessment categories included commercial appeal and color, stem and foliage, bloom form, bloom size and overall quality. Consistency in form and size is rewarded with higher points in those categories.
Sound easy? Not when you consider there were 266 total varieties at this year's show including the 79 rose varieties. Among the award winners was beauty pictured here, Raspberry Ice. Each class including roses, alstro, carnation, gerbera, cut bulbs, mums, potted flowering plants and other cuts is assigned to a team of 3 judges with one grower, one wholesaler and one retailer on each team. The scoring is done independently by each judge and then combined to determine the winners.
The whole process took us several hours. Several hours of wandering row after row of stunningly beautiful flowers. And yes, I needed a Kleenex more than a couple of times!

Move Over Mabel!
For years Mabel reigned supreme as the queen of the bi-color carnations. But in our never ending search for the newest, brightest, sexiest flowers available we've found some new royalty!
Piet pictured here is a bi-color that defies description. Piet fits anywhere from autumn arrangements to peach and coral wedding work. Is it coral? Is it orange? Is it peach? We think it has multiple personalities and that is NOT a disorder when you are talking about flowers.
Another new kid on the carnation block is Green Ball. It's Fuzzy!, It's Furry! It's Fabulous! What more can we say? We could tell you that it won an award at the SAF Outstanding New Varieties Competition.
Just when you thought they could not get any better the folks at Florigene have outdone themselves by improving the bloom size and bloom count on their popular Mini MoonShade series. They have also intensified the colors and lengthened the breaks on their new Floriametrine, Florigate and Florjade minis. And oh, did we mention??? They won an award too. Watch for these and other new exciting varieties coming to Washington Floral in the month of October.

We'll Miss You Sue!
While Sue has been counting down the days till her retirement with anticipation, we've been counting down the things we are so going to miss about her!
*She is known as Washington Floral's Master Mixologist. The lady can shake a cocktail and has added life to many Washington Floral get togethers.
*She's our in-house movie critic, rarely missing a weekend at the movies.
*She's our version of the IKEA V.W. Bug, as she pushes her leaning tower of empty boxes into the box room.
*No one else in the place can tell you exactly how long any item has been on the shelf! Without looking it up!!
*Who will be able to use her "grabber" to reach those hard to reach items with as much style?
*She is a no nonsense, industry veteran with pearls of wisdom to share with customers and co-workers alike
*She never broke anything....she left that to her husband Terry.
Good Luck Sue and Terry Brown in your new home in Ferndale! Your dedication to WFS is appreciated and admired.

You Know You Are a Florist Baby When....
O.K. it's been a tough year. Yes, business is challenging. Sure the economy has been in the toilet but before you put your hand on that flusher handle, remember how much fun we have!
Maintaining a sense of humor in these difficult times is key to keeping the stress level manageable. The Bloomery Florist helps us get a giggle with a floral version of "You Know You are a Redneck When".
Recently, on Britian's Got Talent an opera singer hit a floral high note accompanied by not only an orchestra but by floral designer Ian Lloyd. This cracked Pierce up...Simon was unamused! We found these guys so entertaining that we made them the video of the week on our website.
So when you are feeling all alone, like it's just you against the world in these trying times and you need a little smile....maybe you should grin and sing along with Flower from the movie Bambi.

Kendall Farms Helps Feed the Community
On May 20th, the Temecula Murrieta Rescue Mission marked a sad milestone: the first time it had to turn away a needy family because no food boxes were left.
To make that experience a rarity the Mission is teaming up with flower grower Kendall Farms of Fallbrook, CA. to grow fruits and vegetables for the homeless and impoverished on 2 acres of certified organic land donated by the farm.
Kendall Farms is no stranger to hard times, having lost most of their farm's perennial crop in the 2007 Rice Fire. To read more about this inspirational partnership between the flower grower and the Rescue Mission click here. Learn more about Kendall by taking a virtual farm tour. Thanks Kendall Farms, you make us all want to find ways in which our businesses can enrich the lives of others in the community.

Koi Boy Humiliated but Uninjured The Grand Poobah
We are thankful that a near tragedy was avoided this past month at the Waterman compound. While watering down the flamable portions of his garden in preparation for the 4th of July celebration, our own James Waterman tripped on an un-named obstacle and landed in his Koi Pond. I know, I know-you're thinking "What's the big deal? Just get out!" This only goes to show that you understand neither the gravity of the situation, nor the size of the Koi Pond. Not all koi ponds deserve to be printed in Capital Letters....This one does!
It was only due to the vigilance of local good Samaritans that Jim was found, with three giant Koi holding him down, and a fourth assailant gnawing on his leg. Jim is fine and is expected to make a full recovery. Three of the koi are sulking under the pond lilies and a fourth is recovering from a stomach ailment.
To learn more about what Jim Waterman does when he is not creating inspiring displays and lush designs at Washington Floral or wrangling koi click here.

Make Someone Smile Week
Make Someone Smile Week certainly did just that! Thanks to all the Teleflora Florists who participated in this annual benevolent project. Over 2,000 florists from across the country participated and nearly 20,000 smiley mugs were given to deserving recipients.
Washington Floral hosted a work party to create 150 of the iconic smiley mugs for delivery to American Lake Veterans Hospital. Florists from across the South Sound area pitched in to design and deliver them the week of July 20th.
The project received positive national press on programs like Good Morning America. But the real reward was in the giving. As most florists know, giving flowers is as theraputic as receiving them.

It's the new bonsai we are carrying.
Both indoor and outdoor bonsai are represented and these are not your typical home depot varieties. Some of these specimens are works of art and dozens of years old. Our personal favorite is the Dawn Redwood Grove. One can just imagine strolling through a redwood grove, smelling the forest scent and hearing the rustle of a bear behind you as he attempts to swipe your lunch. O.k. maybe your forest fantasy is a bit more tame but you get the idea. Focus on the beauty of the bonsai and be transported to another dimension.
Beyond being artful additions to almost any style of decor the longevity of bonsai make them a wonderful investment. Cared for properly some bonsai can outlive their owners. What happens if your Bonsai outlives you? We have found a solution for that!
Contrary to popular belief, bonsai are easy to care for. Besides including a care tips guide with each plant we sell there are several helpful u-tube demonstrations devoted to the subject. They are almost as calming to watch as the oil painter dude on PBS.
Sounds crazy, we know but bonsai get stolen. Don't let that worry stop you from stocking up. We've found the lost or stolen bonsai website too.

Now, if only Jeremy would clean those flowers....HMMMMM? Brad Fletcher
Is your shop located between Fife and Everett? Closed at midnight? Do you take funeral orders at 5pm and worry about getting the orders done by 10am because you don't have what you need in stock? Read on to find out how WFS is solving this problem for many of our customers.
There are already 25-30 florists from Fife, Seattle, Federal Way, Sea-Tac, Redmond, Snohomish, Monroe, Bellevue, Kirkland, Issaquah, North Bend, Everett, Edmonds, Enumclaw and other stops in between who are using the Overnight Delivery Service offered by Washington Floral. Jeremy, the night driver pulls away from our dock at 6pm every Sunday through Thursday and delivers into the night. He is on a mission! And except for the occasional Starbucks stop his only goal is to have your flowers waiting in your cooler when you arrive in the morning. You save time, gas, traffic frustration. You get to sleep in more, have an extra cup of coffee, see your kids off to school.
If you would like to sign up for this service ask your salesperson or contact Brad or David. There are no extra charges just your regular delivery charge of $3.50-$7.00 depending on your location. WFS has been offering this service for over 5 years with the same p.m. crew and driver. It's time to stop worrying about getting to the wholesale house in the a.m. Sleep in, knowing that your flowers will be in your cooler and ready to use when you arrive.
Listen to what our p.m. customers have to say!
"Nighttime delivery is a GODSEND! I dont' know what I would do if I didn't have the option of the overnight delivery. It is such a great feeling to know that my needs for the day are met and all I have to do is get to the shop and get started with my orders...no waiting for flowers, or drivers. Saves me money and wear on tear on my nerves. Now if I can just get Jeremy to clean and hydrate those flowers....HMMMMM???" Wilma from Edmonds Flower Shop
"I love the night delivery! What a wonderful treat to walk into the classroom and find an array of wonderful flowers waiting. No wondering when will they arrive?. And of course as a downtown location, night delivery is infinitely easier for the drivers. Occasionally, if I stay late to do paperwork, there is the surprise of a visitor. This has made me jump a time or two! Thank you, thank you, thank you for offering this service. I wish I had the same wonderful option for our Portland classroom" Leanne from Floral Design Institute

Gonna Miss Ya'all!
For more than 12 years she's been taking care of customers and supporting her co-workers. We've watched her develop into one of Washington Floral's most successful and valued employees. And we've seen her drive some pretty hot cars!
Now she'll be driving those hot cars in a much hotter place. Sharon's husband has been transferred to San Antonio, Texas. We tried to convince her that commuting from Texas would not be so bad. After all, it's "just south of here" as she refers to it when she becomes overwhelmed.
She's not the only one who becomes overwhelmed when thinking of it either. Everyone at Washington Floral will miss you Sharon! We all wish you the best that Texas has to offer. And we are looking forward to hearing your twang after you've been there for a while.

And The Winner Is!
Congratulations to Theresa from Brown's Flower Shop, winner of our corsage contest. Theresa's clutch style corsage (#18) was a hit with a majority of the voters. Her efforts earned her a gift box overflowing with Oasis treasures presented by our own Bill Hendrix and Bobaloo Sajor.
When asked if the clutch style corsage was their standard at Brown's she admits that they usually do more traditional corsages but that this was an opportunity to be creative. Theresa is a veteran at Browns, having worked there for over 10 years. But as you can see from her corsage design, she has not fallen in a rut.
Thanks to all who entered and thanks to all who voted. The enthusiasm you showed to take part has been noted and more contests are being planned. Stay tuned for the next Washington Floral Design Challenge! Didn't get a chance to see all the entries? They are still online. Click here to view them all and be inspired.

Gerbera Daisy Care & Handling
Gerbera Daisies are the mother of all finicky flowers. Susceptible to botrytis and prone to bent neck these iconic blooms require special attention to process. "If only there were a pill to solve the gerbera 's ailments" sighed the concerned florist. Chrysal and Washington Floral to the rescue! There IS a gerb pill. Using this Chrysal slow release chlorine tablet combined with sanitary buckets is the one-two punch needed to guarantee gerbera longevity.

If we could link you to the entire Floral Management magazine we would! Their regular care and handling articles are just one of the many reasons we rely on it each month. Oasis Training
Think you know all there is to know about floral foam? You soak it, slice it and poke it with the stems. What else is there to know? Apparently there is a lot more to know.
In fact there is enough new going on at Smithers Oasis that they sent a representative to WFS to conduct an hour long training for our staff. We feel compelled to pass along some of the highlights of that training to you.
- You may have noticed a new packaging on Oasis brand floral foam with the words "Oasis Powered by Floralife Technology." This wording has created some confusion in the industry. Oasis floral foam does NOT have Floralife preservative in it. You still need to add floral food to the water that you soak the foam in. It does have an ingredient that will enhance the life of foliages. No more yellowing leaves!
- Why is DCD cleaner better than bleach? DCD coats surfaces with a film that prevents bacteria from growing. Bleach, on the other hand, looses its effectiveness after only a few moments.
- Coming Soon from Oasis! U-Glu. You've seen it holding inserts into magazines. That long stretchy clear goo that peels off easily. This stuff has been popular with crafters for a while. Imagine the uses creative florists will dream up for this stuff.
- Quick Tip! Doing 8" spheres? Don't soak them completely..cuts down on the weight. Chances are your stems won't be inserted all the way to the center of the ball anyway.
- Did you know that Floralife does shop audits? Representatives occasionally travel with wholesalers to shops in the area and conduct inspections. They will test your water, cooler temperatures, floral food dosing procedures and general floral hygene. Cleaning your tools daily???
- Have you seen Oasis's IDEA quarterly publication? Every page is filled with information, inspiration and ideas on how to use their products in surprising new ways. Ask your salesperson for a copy or sign up to receive your own.

Never Promised You a Rose Garden

As the song goes, we never promised you a rose garden, but we can promise you garden roses! The kind of garden roses that grace the slick pages of all the latest bridal magazines. The kind of garden roses that open wide and flat with petal swirling endlessly. The kind of garden roses whose single stems have the power to fool you into thinking you are surrounded in a garden of roses with their over powering sweet scent.
Garden roses, or David Austin's as they are sometimes called, can be very hard to find and the quality a little hard to count on. Forget all that! Washington Floral is proud to be handling 40cm garden rose varieties guaranteed to make you and your bride swoon. They are available in 13 different varieties from the romantic, wavy petaled Caramel Antike to peony shaped Yves Paiget.
Lead time for specific varieties is two weeks. To introduce you to the quality of these garden roses we are bringing in a limited quantity each week. Be sure to ask your salesperson to add one to your next order. You'll love the scent, the longevity, the stem length, the way they open. Most of all, you'll love being able to say yes to brides who have their heart set on them.

Easter Lily
Chocolate bunnies, painted eggs, baskets full of PEEPS....all reminiscent of Easter but the true symbol of Easter has always been the regal Easter Lily.
According to Biblical scholars, the Easter Lily was found growing in the Garden of Gethsemane where Judas is said to have betrayed Jesus. Legend tells that white lilies miraculously sprung up from the ground where drops of Jesus' sweat and tears fell during his last hours.
The Easter Lily also has close associations with Jesus' mother, the Virgin Mary. In early religious paintings, the Archangel Gabriel is pictured extending a branch of white lilies to Mary, symbolizing that she had become the virgin mother to the savior.
Our crop is in at WFS and we have extended the pre-book pricing. Each year we get the same questions regarding lilies and cats. Click here for information you can give to your customers on how to keep your pets safe when it comes to Easter Lilies.
